Kurt Lockwood from Boston Scientific and Karen Feisthamel from CVS Health Join National 30-Lawyer Firm Kacvinsky, Daisak & Bluni, Augmenting Licensing, Patent and Trademark Capabilities in Healthcare

BOSTON/PROVIDENCE, Oct. 5, 2015 – Kacvinsky Daisak Bluni PLLC announces the arrivals of Kurt Lockwood, Boston Scientific Corporation, group vice president and chief patent counsel, and Karen Feisthamel, CVS Health Corporation, senior legal counsel – intellectual property, as principals in the national 30-lawyer IP law boutique.

“We’re delighted to have Kurt and Karen join KDB,” said principal Scott Bluni, head of KDB’s New England offices and former IP practice head at Bingham McCutchen LLP. “Their experience and skill, particularly in the ever-changing healthcare industry, build upon our firm’s already-talented team of lawyers dedicated to helping clients navigate complex IP issues.”

Mr. Lockwood brings more than 20 years of experience in patent portfolio management and strategic counseling, product clearance and deal diligence, and litigation, specifically in the medical device technology industry. At Boston Scientific, Lockwood led an IP legal team in support of the Endoscopy, Urology, Women’s Health and Interventional Oncology divisions.

Ms. Feisthamel also brings more than 20 years of experience as an IP attorney. While at CVS, she was responsible for all enterprise-wide IP issues for the Fortune 10 company counseling on a wide variety of matters involving trademarks, license agreements, copyrights, patents, and marketing, brand development and advertising. Ms. Feisthamel began her career in IP as a trademark examining attorney at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

“Karen’s and Kurt’s arrival underscore KDB’s strategy of attracting IP lawyers with relevant hands-on experience and perspective, and adds to our growing base of senior attorneys with meaningful corporate and government experience,” added Bluni, who like Lockwood, also worked at Boston Scientific as a senior attorney.

For Lockwood and Feisthamel, the decisions to join KDB were based upon the caliber of the firm’s legal talent and sophisticated client work as well as its entrepreneurial spirit.

“KDB’s reputation as a high-quality IP boutique with an innovative and flexible work environment appealed to me,” said Feisthamel, a Georgetown University Law Center graduate licensed to practice in Connecticut, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia. “It’s a great platform to build a practice focused on compelling IP work.”

Lockwood noted KDB’s depth and knowledge in dealing with sophisticated legal issues affecting the core of the healthcare industry.

“KDB is a firm that understands the business side of intellectual property law,” said Lockwood, who graduated from Vanderbilt University Law School and is licensed to practice in Massachusetts. “The practical and life experiences that KDB lawyers bring to the table each day translate to exceptional opportunities to help clients achieve their business goals.”

Founded in 2003 by John Kacvinsky, formerly with an Amlaw 100 firm and Intel Corp.’s in-house team, KDB was among the nation’s first law firms to focus exclusively on recruiting and retaining talent regardless of location. Through a well-connected network of attorneys nationwide, KDB keeps overhead low and client rates competitive while recruiting experienced IP counsel, most of whom were former in-house counsel, scientists and engineers.

In March, KDB announced the opening of shared-space offices in Boston and Washington, D.C. In August, the firm announced the arrival of two lawyers to its Massachusetts offices, Matthew Fagan and Steven Russell.

“Our strategy is to focus on investing in attorneys who understand our clients and their needs to help them succeed,” said Kacvinsky. “Our lawyers, our culture and our work revolve around clients and the ever-changing IP legal landscape.”
